Dans un premier historique pour la série des Championnats du Monde Pokémon, la saison 2026 et les suivantes verront les compétiteurs VGC s'affronter dans le prochain jeu Pokémon Champions, plutôt qu'un titre principal traditionnel. Pour encore bouleverser le format l'année prochaine, le règlement officiel de Pokémon Champions intégrera le mécanisme de Méga Évolution.

Traditionnellement, les joueurs passent la saison compétitive à se battre pour obtenir une invitation aux Championnats du Monde en utilisant le dernier jeu principal Pokémon, comme Pokémon Écarlate et Violet ou, précédemment, Pokémon Épée et Bouclier.

Pokémon Champions n'est pas un RPG axé sur l'histoire, mais un nouveau jeu de combat multijoueur disponible sur mobile et Nintendo Switch. Avec un système d'entraînement simplifié, il vise à rendre le jeu compétitif plus accessible. Le jeu prendra également en charge la connectivité avec Pokémon Home, permettant aux dresseurs de transférer leurs collections de Pokémon existantes.
