FM25 Canceled: Developers Apologize

Authore: HazelUpdate:Feb 23,2025

Sports Interactive and Sega have announced the cancellation of Football Manager 25 across all platforms. This marks the first time the long-running series has skipped a year since its 2004 debut.

The developers had touted FM25 as a significant technical and visual leap, aiming for a "generational advancement" by transitioning to the Unity engine. However, this transition proved challenging, particularly impacting the player experience and user interface.

The decision, revealed alongside Sega Sammy Holdings' financial results (which include a writedown of FM25-related costs), followed extensive internal discussions. Sega has confirmed that no job losses are associated with the cancellation.

There will be no FM24 update incorporating 2024/25 season data, as resources are fully dedicated to the next iteration. Sports Interactive is currently negotiating with platform holders and licensors to potentially extend FM24 agreements on services like Game Pass.

The cancellation follows two prior delays, the last pushing the release to March 2025. Development has now shifted to Football Manager 26, anticipated for its usual November release window. Refunds are being offered to those who pre-ordered FM25.

Sports Interactive acknowledged the disappointment, apologizing for the delayed announcement due to stakeholder compliance requirements. They emphasized their commitment to delivering high-quality games and explained that despite progress in some areas, the overall player experience and interface didn't meet their standards, a conclusion supported by playtesting. Releasing a subpar game, or delaying further into the football season, were deemed unacceptable options.

The developer assures fans that all efforts are now focused on ensuring Football Manager 26 meets expectations, promising future updates on its progress.
