Let's be frank: Mortal Kombat 1's popularity is waning. Season 3 content appears cancelled due to underwhelming sales, and the recently released Pro Kompetition trailer, showcasing the game's esports circuit, is underwhelming at best.

The 2025 Pro Kompetition boasts a total prize pool of $255,000. This is a relatively small amount, even by fighting game community (FGC) standards. Many top players previously voiced concerns about insufficient prize money, citing the unsustainable nature of international travel for potentially meager earnings.

This year's competitive scene will likely see a division between North American and European players, with their paths converging only at EVO 2025, considered the premier fighting game tournament.

While there's a palpable attempt to generate excitement, and to some degree it's succeeding, the reality behind the hype and the teased in-game image of the T-1000 is rather bleak.
