PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
As of mid-January 2025, the elusive PlayStation 5 disc drive is back in stock at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.
The shortage stems partly from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, and further exacerbated by the 2024 launch of the disc-less PS5 Pro. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to add a disc drive separately – a feature many US consumers have sought, leading to persistent shortages of the official Sony attachment.
While some retailers have restocked, the availability remains precarious. As of January 15th, the drive was available on Amazon US and PlayStation Direct for the MSRP of $79.99. A third-party Walmart seller was also found offering it, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits
PlayStation Direct limits orders to one per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, likely ties to the PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive option. Gamers wanting the best PS5 experience and physical media must purchase the drive separately.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still out of stock, the shortage persists. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
