The tansa – a compact drum variant – is played with two rattan sticks. Serving as the ensemble's conductor, the tansa player directs the musicians and dictates musical rhythms through precise beats.

Traditional tambua drums are crafted from specially selected hollowed wood. Sizes vary dramatically, from large 50-60cm diameter Tambadang Gadang ("great drums") to compact 25-30cm Tambua Kaciak ("small drums"). A typical ensemble features 6-12 drums.
