Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?
Fighting Lu Bu is a formidable challenge. In my playthrough of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, it took over an hour to defeat him. Yet, there are compelling reasons to take him on. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu grants you bragging rights—a true badge of honor. Secondly, if you align with Shu or Wei, you'll face him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4, leaving you no choice. Finally, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy, and in the post-game, you can secure the game's final weapon, the halberd, providing strong incentives to challenge him.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Preparation is key before facing Lu Bu. Equip a weapon like a sword that can hit multiple times and stagger him. Choose Battle Arts that require minimal Bravery, activate quickly, and have a wide range. During my fight, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell are essential to boost your health and defense, as Lu Bu's attacks can quickly deplete your health. Opt for a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be crucial for gaining Bravery during the fight.
Initially, Lu Bu will be mounted on his horse, Red Hare. He charges around the battlefield, but pauses occasionally to rest. Use these moments to attack him with your Battle Arts and then retreat. His attacks generally have limited area of effect, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, marking the start of the true battle.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more menacing. His attacks are swift and he moves rapidly across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura that makes him immune to staggering. When he charges, evade and prepare for subsequent charges, as he attacks in sets of three. Be wary of his grab attack, which he performs without his spear; evade it to avoid significant damage.
His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow. With little warning, he launches three massive arrows three times, capable of juggling and annihilating your health. Use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash to interrupt this attack. Close-quarters moves like Palm Strike are fatal here. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, granting invincibility that can save you if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.
Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Continuous attacks help charge your Battle Arts quickly and break his Fortitude meter. Stay close to better anticipate his moves and remember: evasion is your best defense.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, signaling the final phase. He becomes unstaggered and unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou Attack. Use all your remaining resources—activate Musou attacks when he's near, employ Battle Arts, and strike quickly and forcefully. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here allows you to finally defeat this legendary adversary.
That's how you can triumph over Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
