Typically, 29 is played by four players arranged in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other. The game utilizes 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, featuring eight cards in each of the four French suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card hierarchy in each suit runs from high to low: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? To capture tricks that contain valuable cards.

The point values assigned to the cards are as follows:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points

This results in a total of 28 points from the cards. In certain versions, an additional point is awarded for winning the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which is where the game gets its name. However, many modern players do not count the point for the last trick, yet the game retains its name, 29, even when played with only 28 points.

Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full 52-card deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player receives a set of these cards, one of each suit. Meanwhile, the Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six for this purpose.
