Localthunk, the creative force behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently stepped into a heated debate within the Balatro subreddit sparked by a moderator's stance on AI-generated art. The situation unfolded when DrTankHead, a former moderator of the subreddit and current moderator of an NSFW Balatro subreddit, announced that AI art would not be banned on the subreddits, provided it was properly labeled. This decision, DrTankHead claimed, followed discussions with Playstack, the game's publisher.
However, Localthunk quickly clarified their position on Bluesky, stating that neither they nor Playstack condoned AI-generated art. They further elaborated in a statement on the subreddit, emphasizing their opposition to AI art due to its potential harm to artists and its absence from Balatro. Localthunk confirmed the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team and announced a ban on AI-generated images on the subreddit, with plans to update the rules and FAQ accordingly.
In response, Playstack's communications director acknowledged the need for clearer rules, as previous guidelines might have been misinterpreted. The remaining moderators aim to refine the language to prevent future confusion.
DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator from r/Balatro, posted on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, clarifying that their goal was not to make the subreddit AI-centric but floated the idea of dedicating specific days for non-NSFW AI-generated art. A user suggested that DrTankHead take a break from Reddit for a couple of weeks.
The controversy surrounding AI-generated content reflects broader industry debates. The use of generative AI has been a contentious issue within the video game and entertainment sectors, particularly amidst significant layoffs. Critics argue over ethical and rights issues, as well as the quality of AI-generated content. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to create a game solely with AI failed, highlighting AI's limitations in replacing human talent.
Despite these challenges, tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI. Electronic Arts (EA) declared AI as central to its business model, and Capcom has explored using generative AI for creating game environments. Meanwhile, Activision's use of AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, including a controversial "AI slop" zombie Santa loading screen, has sparked further debate within the community.
