In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate thoroughly. This final decision carries immense weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially 30) are needed for certain interactions to influence companion choices and prevent their departure.
(Spoilers ahead!)
Should You Free Orpheus?
The decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers). After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after failure), the choice is stark: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
Side with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise, as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this strengthens the party against the Netherbrain, it might alienate fans of these characters.
Free Orpheus: Freeing Orpheus causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, will willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people.
In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation, but free Orpheus if you're willing to risk it for your companions. The Emperor's choice might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.
Moral Considerations:
The "good" choice depends on personal morality, but boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives can feel overly demanding. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if impacting the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but ensures a morally upright (albeit tentacled) outcome. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to a satisfying conclusion for all.
