The acclaimed series Shōgun, which has garnered 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for an eagerly anticipated second season. Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the character of pilot John Blackthorn, is not only reprising his role but will also step into the position of co-executive producer for Season 2, as confirmed by an official press release from FX.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role, signed on for Season 2 in May of the previous year, following the show's renewal. Initially conceived as a limited series, the show's success prompted its continuation. Sanada has been elevated to the role of executive producer after contributing to the production of the first season. Production for the new season is slated to commence in January 2026 in Vancouver, the same location where the original series was filmed.
FX describes the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was based on James Clavell’s novel. The network elaborated on the narrative arc and connection between the two seasons:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) navigated the treacherous waters of political survival as his adversaries within the Council of Regents banded together against him. The arrival of a stranded European ship introduced John Blackthorne (Jarvis), whose strategic insights proved invaluable to Toranaga, helping him secure victory in a pivotal civil war.
"Season two of Shōgun will be set a decade after the events of the initial season, further exploring the historically-inspired saga of these two men from vastly different worlds, whose destinies remain deeply intertwined."
Fans of the series can look forward to new episodes by the end of 2026, though for now, anticipation builds as we await further updates.
