Legendary Entertainment's new Street Fighter movie has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest big-screen adaptation of the iconic fighting game franchise.

Capcom's significant involvement is confirmed, lending credence to a faithful adaptation. The film is already slated for release on March 20, 2026.

PlayThis new Street Fighter movie follows in the footsteps of the infamous 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia. While initially panned by critics, it's since gained a cult following.

Casting details remain under wraps, but fans can anticipate appearances from beloved Street Fighter characters.

Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) were attached to the project, but they left last summer. Sakurai's appointment suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, mirroring the style of The Eric Andre Show. This stylistic choice could prove exciting for fans who appreciate the game's cartoonish elements.

In the meantime, players can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new fighter, Mai Shiranui. Read IGN's comprehensive review of Street Fighter 6 for a deeper dive.
