Will Smith has opened up about why he passed on Christopher Nolan’s Inception, sharing his reasoning publicly for the first time.
Inception is a 2010 sci-fi heist film centered on surreal journeys into dreams. The story follows a team of operatives who infiltrate a target’s subconscious to carry out corporate espionage—but as the layers deepen, the mission spirals into a psychological nightmare.
Reports suggested Nolan first offered the lead role to Brad Pitt, then Will Smith, before ultimately casting Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, 15 years after the film’s release, Smith has spoken for the first time about his decision to decline the part.
“I don’t think I’ve ever said this out loud before,” Smith said in an interview with UK radio station Kiss Xtra.“Chris Nolan brought me Inception first, and I just didn’t get it. I’ve never admitted that until now. Looking back, those kinds of movies—stepping into alternate realities—don’t always click right away. But I’m still hurt by those two.”
The phrase “those two” refers to Smith’s well-documented decision to pass on the role of Neo in The Matrix (1999), a choice he’s discussed before. His revelation that he also turned down Inception because he “didn’t get it” now adds to a growing list of major films he regrets passing on. Inception went on to earn over $839 million worldwide and became one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s defining performances.
