Marvel Rivals: Are Bots Secretly Influencing Gameplay?

Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games' hero shooter, faces growing player suspicion regarding the use of bots in its Quickplay matches. The game, lauded for its style and iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine, boasts a massive player base. However, weeks of discussion on platforms like Reddit highlight concerns about AI opponents appearing in standard Quickplay, not just dedicated practice modes.

Players report encountering matches where opponents, and sometimes teammates, exhibit suspiciously low skill levels, leading to speculation that the game strategically inserts bots to prevent player frustration from losing streaks or to reduce queue times. The lack of transparency from NetEase fuels this suspicion. Players have noted several potential indicators of bot matches: repetitive and unnatural in-game behavior, similar player names (often single words in all caps or unusual name combinations), and, most notably, enemy profiles labeled "restricted."

The concern isn't just about losing to bots; players worry about the impact on skill development. Practicing new heroes in Quickplay becomes unreliable if wins are artificially inflated by bot opponents. This lack of clear feedback on actual skill improvement frustrates players.

NetEase has yet to officially comment on these allegations. While the use of bots in online games isn't new, the lack of transparency in Marvel Rivals is a significant point of contention. Players are divided on the solution: some want a toggle to enable or disable bot matches, others want their complete removal, while a few see them as opportunities for achievement completion.

The controversy highlights the delicate balance developers must strike between player retention and fair gameplay. While NetEase plans for a robust future with new heroes and content, including the Fantastic Four and a new Spider-Man suit, addressing the bot concerns is crucial for maintaining player trust and the game's long-term success. We have reached out to NetEase for comment. Meanwhile, players continue to debate the issue and explore strategies, such as using Invisible Woman to counter suspected bots, as detailed in other articles.
