Overwatch 2 Extends Beta Playtesting

Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return

Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will transition to an open queue format. This format will require teams to field 1-3 heroes of each class. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains strong.

The initial 6v6 mode, introduced during last November's Overwatch Classic event, proved incredibly popular. Its initial run, though brief, quickly established itself as a top-played mode. A second playtest, beginning December 17th, was originally scheduled to end January 6th. However, due to sustained player interest, the playtest has been extended.

While the precise end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. Until mid-season, it will retain its current role queue format. Following this, the shift to open queue will take place, maintaining the 1-3 hero-per-class requirement per team.

The Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode

The enduring success of Overwatch 2's 6v6 mode is unsurprising, as its return has been a frequently requested feature since the sequel's 2022 launch. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, a major departure from the original Overwatch, significantly altered gameplay, impacting players differently.

However, the extended playtest fuels optimism among fans hoping for 6v6's permanent integration. Many anticipate its inclusion in Overwatch 2's competitive playlist, a possibility contingent on the successful conclusion of the ongoing playtests.
