Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has launched a free demo for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii today, now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The announcement was made on X/Twitter, confirming the demo’s release at 7 AM Pacific / 10 AM Eastern / 3 PM UK time.
The full game is set to launch on February 21 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. However, the free demo will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, limiting early access to next-gen and PC platforms.
While RGG Studio has not officially confirmed whether demo progress will carry over to the full version, the demo’s structure suggests it won’t. Instead of following the main story’s beginning, the demo allows players to jump directly into select freeroam segments and combat scenarios. This includes exploring parts of Honolulu and Madlantis—locations not accessible at the start of the full game.
Players can experiment with both the Mad Dog and Sea Dog combat styles, take on powerful bounty enemies, and engage in four ship and deck battles within the Pirates’ Coliseum. The demo also features new character customization options and side activities such as karaoke, complete with a selection of three songs.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a spin-off sequel to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the eighth mainline entry in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series (or ninth, including Yakuza 0). The game follows Goro Majima as he awakens with amnesia and embraces a pirate’s life, setting sail across a vibrant Hawaiian-inspired world.
A trailer debuted during the October Xbox Partner Showcase, offering the first real look at naval combat reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, along with the return of fan-favorite character Taiga Saejima—hinting at deeper connections to the main series lore.
Compared to previous spin-offs like Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, this adventure promises more substantial content, with an estimated story runtime of 15 to 18 hours. Additionally, fans who register for email updates or join the Sega rewards program will unlock the ability to dress Majima as series icon Kiryu Kazuma.
