Take-Two Boss Says 'Legacy' Civilization Audience Will Eventually Come Around on Civilization 7 Amid 'Mixed' Steam User Reviews

Civilization 7's Steam launch has garnered mixed user reviews, but Take-Two's CEO remains optimistic. While early access players, often considered hardcore fans, have voiced concerns regarding the user interface (UI), limited map variety, and missing features, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick believes these criticisms will subside as players become more familiar with the game.

The game's current Steam user review rating is "mixed," with players citing UI issues, a lack of map diversity, and missing expected features. However, Firaxis is actively addressing this feedback, promising UI improvements, the addition of team-based multiplayer, and more diverse map types.

Zelnick points to a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as evidence of the game's overall quality. He acknowledges negative reviews, such as Eurogamer's 2/5 score, but maintains that the "legacy Civ audience," initially apprehensive due to significant gameplay changes, will eventually appreciate the game's innovations.

Zelnick highlights the game's revolutionary three-Age campaign structure (Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern) with simultaneous Age Transitions for all players. This transition involves selecting a new civilization, choosing retained Legacies, and witnessing world evolution—a novel system unprecedented in previous Civilization titles.

Despite the positive outlook, Firaxis faces the challenge of improving player sentiment, particularly on Steam. A strong Steam user review rating is vital for the game's visibility and success on the platform. The current mixed reception directly impacts its discoverability and overall perception among potential players.
