WWE 2K25 Gameplay Revealed: Preview Highlights Key Updates

WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series continues its annual evolution, building upon the successful 2022 relaunch with iterative improvements. WWE 2K25 promises new features including "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new match type, "Bloodline Rules." However, a recent preview focused primarily on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.

Showcase Mode: A Reworked History

This year's Showcase Mode chronicles the Anoa'i family, featuring Roman Reigns and The Bloodline, alongside legends like The Wild Samoans and The Rock. It offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. While offering unique perspectives for WWE fans, the mode still faces minor issues.

Addressing Past Concerns

Previous Showcase modes suffered from excessive use of real-life footage ("Slingshot"). While not entirely eliminated, 2K25 significantly reduces this, replacing many segments with in-engine recreations. These are shorter and less jarring, improving the overall flow. However, the demo still featured instances where control was removed during key moments, a point requiring further refinement. The checklist system remains, but optional timed objectives with cosmetic rewards and no penalties for failure represent progress. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a fresh perspective.

Gameplay Enhancements

Core gameplay remains largely unchanged, retaining the successful grappling system from WWE 2K24. Notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game adding strategic depth to the beginning of matches. The submission system, a color-matching mini-game, also returns, but is thankfully optional. Weapon throwing returns with expanded environments and a wider array of weapons, including Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle. The most significant gameplay change is the introduction of intergender matches, opening up a vast array of previously unavailable matchups. The roster boasts over 300 wrestlers.

A New Match Type: Underground

A preview of the new "Underground" match type, a rope-less exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, promises a unique and exciting addition. Further details will be available soon.

Overall Impression

WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with smart refinements rather than revolutionary changes. While the core gameplay remains largely consistent, the improvements to Showcase Mode and the introduction of new features like intergender matches and the Underground mode are welcome additions. The full impact of the unpreviewed features will determine whether 2K25 truly surpasses its predecessors, but initial impressions suggest a solid and incremental improvement to an already enjoyable wrestling game.
