Pesten With Cards

Pesten With Cards is a classic Dutch card game, literally translating to "Bullying With Cards." It's widely enjoyed for its fast-paced and competitive nature. Similar games are played across the globe under various names such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Uno, Puque, Чешский Дурак (Czech Fool), Фараон (Pharaoh), Крокодил (Crocodile), Tschau Sepp, and more. The primary objective of the game is simple yet thrilling: be the first player to get rid of all your cards.

To win, players must play their final card and declare “Last Card” before doing so. Failing to announce it results in a penalty—drawing two additional cards from the stock. This rule ensures everyone stays alert and engaged until the very last move.

The game is typically played using one or more standard decks of cards, including Jokers. Each player starts with seven cards, while the remaining cards form the draw pile or stock. At the beginning of the game, the top card is revealed to start the discard pile. Players then take turns in a clockwise direction, matching either the number or suit of the top card on the pile. Exceptions include Jokers and Jacks, which can be played on any card. If a player cannot play a valid card, they must draw one from the stock. If the drawn card can be played immediately, the player may choose to play it or keep it in hand.

Last Card Rule

When you're down to your final card, you must click the “Last Card” button located above your hand to notify other players. This action confirms that you're about to end the round. If you forget to press this button before playing your final card, you'll receive a two-card penalty, and your winning card won’t count. Similarly, pressing the “Last Card” button incorrectly also triggers a two-card penalty. Importantly, the button can be pressed at any time—even when it’s not your turn—to ensure you don't miss the opportunity to declare before your final play.

Winning the round requires successfully placing your final card on the pile. However, certain special cards cannot be used as your last card, depending on the game settings.

Special Cards

Each card placed on the discard pile may trigger a unique effect, depending on regional rules and game settings. These effects add depth and strategy to the gameplay:

• Joker: Forces the next player to draw 5 cards. If that player holds another Joker, they can play it, increasing the draw amount by 5 each time. Drawn cards cannot be played immediately, and the turn moves to the next player.

• Two: Requires the next player to draw 2 cards. Like the Joker, another Two can be played to increase the total draw count by 2. Some settings allow playing a Joker on a Two, adding 5 extra cards to the draw pile. However, a Two cannot be played on a Joker.

• Seven: Compels the current player to play an additional card immediately. This means if you play a Seven and have only one card left, you must remember to declare “Last Card” again after playing it. If no playable card exists, you must draw from the stock.

• Eight: Skips the next player’s turn, allowing the following player to continue. In a two-player match, this effectively gives the same player another turn—similar to the effect of a Seven.

• Ten: Triggers a card exchange among all players. Each player selects one card from their hand and passes it to the player on their left. Players must carefully decide which card to give away to avoid helping opponents.

These special rules make Pesten With Cards a dynamic and unpredictable experience, especially when combined with customizable game options.
