Application Description

For kids aged 5-7, ScratchJr offers an engaging way to dive into the world of programming by dragging colorful blocks to create programs that make characters move and interact. This introductory programming language is designed to help young children (ages 5 and up) craft their own interactive stories and games. By snapping together graphical programming blocks, children can bring their characters to life, making them move, jump, dance, and sing. They can also personalize their creations using the paint editor, add their voices and sounds, and even include photos of themselves to enhance their projects.

ScratchJr draws inspiration from the renowned Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), which is used by millions of young people (ages 8 and up) worldwide. To cater to younger audiences, the interface and programming language of ScratchJr have been thoughtfully redesigned to be developmentally appropriate. This careful design takes into account the cognitive, personal, social, and emotional development of young children.

We view coding (or computer programming) as a vital form of literacy, much like writing. It helps children organize their thoughts and express their ideas. While coding was once considered too complex for most, we believe it should be accessible to everyone, just as writing is. As children engage with ScratchJr, they don't just interact with computers; they create and express themselves through them. This process fosters problem-solving skills, project design, and sequencing, which are crucial for academic success. Additionally, it integrates math and language in a fun and meaningful way, supporting early childhood numeracy and literacy. With ScratchJr, children aren't just learning to code; they're coding to learn.

ScratchJr is a collaborative effort between the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was implemented by Two Sigma, with graphics and illustrations crafted by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
