15$3,399.99 save 6%$3,199.99 at AlienwareThe primary distinction between the two Area-51 gaming laptops lies in their screens. The 16" model features a 2560x1600 240Hz IPS display, while the 18" model boasts a larger 2560x1600 300Hz IPS display. The larger 18" model also includes a dedicated numpad and superior cooling. Both discounted configurations come equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU, 64GB of DDR5-6400MHz RAM, and a 2TB SSD. The 64GB of RAM represents a significant upgrade, as these laptops typically come with 32GB at this price point.
This CPU / GPU Combo Excels in Any Game
The Area-51 laptop is outfitted with an exceptionally powerful CPU, the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, which achieves a max turbo frequency of 5.4GHz and features 24 cores and 40MB of total L2 cache. According to Passmark, this is the fastest laptop processor currently available, outperforming the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D by 7%.
Tom's Hardware reports that the RTX 5080 mobile GPU is approximately 15%-20% more powerful than its predecessor, the RTX 4080 mobile GPU. It also surpasses the RTX 4090 by about 5%, making it a better value compared to the pricier RTX 5090. Despite being nearly $1,000 less expensive, the RTX 5080 lags only about 15% behind. Given that the Alienware Area-51 utilizes a QHD+ (2560x1600) display rather than a 4K one, the RTX 5080 should deliver high framerates in new and upcoming games, especially with the support of DLSS 4.
The Area-51: New Style, More Power, Better Cooling
New for 2025, the Alienware Area-51 gaming laptop features a magnesium alloy chassis with advanced cooling to manage the latest high-performance components. This includes additional fans, larger cutouts for improved airflow, increased use of copper, and a new thermal interface material for efficient heat dissipation. Dell claims the laptop can handle a higher power ceiling of up to 240W TDP without increasing noise levels.
In terms of design, the Area-51 showcases smooth contours with rounded edges and soft corners, a departure from the typical squared-off designs. The hinges are mostly internal, making them nearly invisible. As expected from an Alienware product, there are extensive options for RGB LED customization. Connectivity options include three USB Type-A 3.2 15Gbps ports (one with PowerShare), two Thunderbolt / USB Type-C ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a card reader. The 16" model weighs 7.5 pounds, while the 18" model weighs 9.6 pounds.
