The highly anticipated reboot of the Narnia series, helmed by the acclaimed writer and director Greta Gerwig, has added the talented Carey Mulligan to its burgeoning cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulligan joins an impressive lineup that includes former James Bond star Daniel Craig, Sex Education's Emma Mackey, and Hollywood legend Meryl Streep.
Greta Gerwig, fresh off the success of her 2023 blockbuster Barbie, will once again take on the roles of both writer and director for this fresh interpretation of C.S. Lewis's beloved fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia.
The upcoming film will adapt the prequel novel, The Magician's Nephew, which is set before the events of the iconic and most famous Narnia story, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Mulligan, celebrated for her numerous accolades including Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations, is set to portray Mabel Kirke, the mother of the book's young protagonist, Digory.
Daniel Craig will take on the role of the film's titular magician and Digory's uncle, while Emma Mackey will portray a younger version of Narnia's notorious White Witch. Meryl Streep will lend her voice to the role of Aslan, the series' revered talking lion.
This isn't the first time Narnia has graced the silver screen. A trilogy of films released between 2005 and 2010 adapted the first three Narnia books by C.S. Lewis: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. These films featured Tilda Swinton as the White Witch and Liam Neeson voicing Aslan.
Following the unexpected box office success of her Barbie movie, which earned eight Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Song, Gerwig's new take on Narnia promises to be a captivating addition to the fantasy genre. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is slated for release in 2026.
