Destiny 2's Prophecy Year: Key Updates for Guardians

Authore: LiamUpdate:May 20,2025

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just revealed the exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy," featuring two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates for both paying and free players.

The "Year of Prophecy" marks the first year with four major content releases, split between two paid expansions and two free updates. This approach ensures that all players, regardless of their investment level, can enjoy the new content.

Kicking off the year is "Rite of the Nine," a free update already available to all players. This update offers a fresh take on dungeon diving, suitable for both veterans and newcomers. The familiar dungeons—Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep—will feature unique twists, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and explore refreshed dungeon weapons.

On July 15, the new expansion "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate" will launch. This paid expansion introduces a multiyear saga involving the mysterious Nine, who predate the Traveler. Players will meet new ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora, as they explore the new destination, Kepler. This location is inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding of Destiny 2’s dungeons, encouraging deep exploration and player-driven discovery. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including updated armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen called the Portal will allow players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops. Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops focus on cooperative play, while Solo Ops cater to players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards through curated activity rotations.

As with any new expansion, pre-order bonuses are available, including an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Here’s a detailed look at what each pre-order option offers:

On September 9, the "Ash & Iron" major update will launch, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. The year concludes with the "Shadow & Order" major update on March 3.

"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

These updates and expansions come at a crucial time for Bungie, following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another 100 layoffs.

While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first hands-on preview of Marathon was shared recently, suggesting it will satisfy the long-standing demand for a new Bungie PvP experience when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
