Dragon Age Star Devastated by Backlash, Claims BioWare's Critics Wanted Failure

Dragon Age star Alix Wilton Regan has shared her heartfelt reaction to the backlash against last year's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, attributing the "mixed reactions" to individuals who "wanted to see the game fail, or wanted to see [BioWare] fail."

The actor, renowned for voicing the Female Inquisitor in both Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, expressed to IGN her deep disappointment over BioWare's latest game not resonating with a broader audience, despite receiving predominantly favorable reviews from critics.

During a recent interview covering her array of iconic video game roles, including her part in Microsoft's upcoming Perfect Dark reboot, Wilton Regan reflected on her cherished experience as BioWare's Inquisitor, though she doubts the character's return in future installments.

Play"I feel absolutely devastated for BioWare as a studio that they got such mixed reactions to the game," Wilton Regan remarked on the response to The Veilguard. "I personally thought it was a really strong game. It was BioWare at their best, staying true to their roots.

"Unfortunately, I also believe a significant number of people were rooting for its failure, or for BioWare's downfall, influenced by the toxic elements of the online community, which we've sadly come to know all too well."

Upon its release, The Veilguard faced a wave of negative reviews online, with some criticism labeling the game as "woke" due to its inclusion of a non-binary companion character and options for players to select transgender identities. On Steam, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now tagged with a 'Mixed' user rating, accompanied by user-defined tags such as "LGBTQ+" and "politics."

"People were criticizing the game even before its launch," Wilton Regan added. "It's absurd. How can you form a valid opinion on a game, a book, a film, or a TV show before experiencing it? It's simply an illogical position to take."

In January, publisher EA reported that Dragon Age: The Veilguard fell short of their sales expectations by about 50%, shortly after the game's director, Corrine Busche, announced her departure from the company. Additionally, other BioWare employees who contributed to the game were let go.

That same month, BioWare announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard would not receive any more updates, signaling the end of its content cycle.

"I genuinely wish nothing but success for the BioWare team, as I deeply admire them," Wilton Regan concluded. "Whatever projects they tackle next, I am confident their exceptional skills will be recognized and celebrated. We are fortunate to anticipate more masterpieces from them in the future."

A streamlined BioWare is currently focusing on Mass Effect 5, though no release date has been set yet.
