FromSoftware has unveiled additional details about its upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. The collaboration with Nintendo appears to have influenced not only the game's style but even the design of its hub guardian—resulting in an unexpectedly adorable character.
An Unconventional Guide for Hunters
The recent Switch 2 Direct trailer concluded with a peculiar winged rat covered in glowing glyphs staring at the audience. Many wondered about this creature's role—Now, we know it serves as the player's primary companion in the hub area.
"This character fulfills a similar function to the firekeepers in Dark Souls," director Hidetaka Miyazaki told Nintendo in an interview. "They remain at the hub, offering guidance and support."
"Given our partnership with Nintendo, we decided to incorporate a slightly... cuter approach this time."
When pressed for clarification, Miyazaki joked, "Yes, it’s cute, but don't be fooled—this rat is actually an elderly gentleman (laughs)."
A Departure from Tradition
FromSoftware’s hub guardians—from Dark Souls’ Fire Keeper to Bloodborne’s Doll—have always played crucial roles in players' journeys. However, this marks the studio’s first venture into a deliberately charming design for such a central character.
With The Duskbloods emphasizing PvPvE gameplay, the exact nature of the winged rat’s guidance remains mysterious. Miyazaki teased that the team has experimented with fresh mechanics, so players should brace for surprises when the game launches in 2026.
