George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate world of Game of Thrones, has recently teased the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, stirring excitement among fans. Martin, who co-created the lore and history for FromSoftware's critically acclaimed game Elden Ring, has been a key figure in its promotion, with his contributions highlighted prominently in the game's credits alongside FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, when asked about his potential involvement in a sequel to Elden Ring, Martin skillfully sidestepped the question but hinted at a potential movie adaptation. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring," he revealed. This isn't the first time Martin has teased such a project, aligning with Miyazaki's openness to an adaptation, provided it involves a "very strong partner."

Miyazaki, in an interview with The Guardian, expressed his willingness for an Elden Ring movie, emphasizing the need for a reliable partner due to FromSoftware's limited experience in other mediums. "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example," he said, highlighting the necessity of trust and mutual vision with any potential collaborators.
However, Martin acknowledged a significant hurdle to his deep involvement in the project: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he told IGN. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for The Winds of Winter has been agonizing for fans, with Martin himself admitting the delays. "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late," he confessed in December. Despite the setbacks, he remains committed to the book, noting, "But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!"
Martin's work on Elden Ring focused on worldbuilding, a task he enjoys and has excelled at in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. He explained to IGN how he helped shape the game's backstory, detailing the events and lore that transpired thousands of years before the game's present. "And I had some ideas about the magic and the runes. There was a lot about runes. And I worked it all out," Martin shared, emphasizing the collaborative process with FromSoftware.
When asked if all his work was incorporated into the game, Martin hinted at the potential for more material to be used in future projects. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he noted, drawing parallels to other expansive fantasy universes like Tolkien's Middle-earth.
