When starting a new character in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm. While initially limited to one pet per save file, the game's 1.6 update has opened up the possibility of welcoming more companions.
To unlock the ability to adopt additional pets, you'll need to maximize your friendship level with your current pet. Daily tasks include filling their water bowl with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills naturally. Additionally, pet them once a day; a heart bubble will confirm you've done so. Monitor your pet's friendship progress in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice about adopting more pets. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the end of the first year, you'll receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern area of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. Essential for keeping your pets hydrated, these bowls also serve as their "home," preventing them from running away if neglected. Each bowl costs 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood, obtainable with a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to buy these before adopting to maintain your friendship meter.

For those looking to enhance their pets' living space, Marnie's Ranch offers optional decorative items like Doghouses and Cat Trees, which, while charming, do not affect the pets' friendship meters.
By following these steps, you can enrich your Stardew Valley farm with multiple pets. For more tips and guides on Stardew Valley, including selecting the best farm type, visit The Escapist.
