Guillermo del Toro’s passion for Frankenstein may run even deeper than Victor Frankenstein’s own obsession with creation.
At Netflix’s recent “Next on Netflix” preview event, the visionary director offered a glimpse into his highly anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale. While a full trailer won’t arrive until this summer, Netflix unveiled an exclusive first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the infamous scientist (see above).
“I’ve been trying to make this film for 20 to 25 years,” del Toro revealed in a video message, as reported by Variety. “This story has lived in my mind for nearly 50 years. Some might even say I’m… obsessed.” As he spoke those words, viewers got a peek at his personal Frankenstein memorabilia collection housed in his legendary Bleak House.
In a private preview, del Toro shared footage that included Isaac’s Victor Frankenstein engaging in tense dialogue with Mia Goth’s mysterious aristocratic character. The clip also revealed Jacob Elordi as the Creature—sporting long black hair, stitched gray skin, and a haunting red glint in his eyes. Del Toro described the project as more than just a film: “Over the years, this character has fused with my soul. It has become my autobiography. This is as personal as it gets.”
It’s no exaggeration. For decades, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy has pursued this dream with relentless dedication. Let’s now explore the long, winding journey that brought Netflix’s Frankenstein to life…
