Helldivers 2 Update Illuminates Super Earth Streets

Helldivers 2 now features Super Earth battlegrounds as part of the major Heart of Democracy update.

As leaks suggested last week, the Heart of Democracy update—now live on PC and PlayStation 5—brings the Illuminate invasion to Super Earth. Players can now select missions on the homeworld in its Mega Cities and fight alongside SEAF soldiers.

These urban biomes include operations focused on liberating the cities, which developer Arrowhead states will have "a significant impact on planetary campaigns." This is part of Helldivers 2's ongoing Galactic War, a community-driven meta-narrative orchestrated by Arrowhead.

Here are the official details from the PlayStation Blog:

Helldivers have a new objective: repel the Illuminate invasion by contesting areas where the enemy fleet is landing. It won't be easy. Like an intergalactic tug-of-war, you'll struggle against constant enemy pressure, rapidly gaining and losing ground.

As shown in the trailer, players can activate Planetary Defense Cannons to destroy the Illuminate fleet. Additionally, SEAF troops will aid in the city's defense. These small squads can fight independently or be ordered to follow Helldivers, offering temporary backup during missions. Players must also be cautious of civilians still on the streets, as managing friendly fire remains as crucial as eliminating aliens.

The Heart of Democracy update reflects Arrowhead's long-term commitment to supporting Helldivers 2 for years to come, following its record-breaking launch.

Last week, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani addressed player concerns that the studio might shift focus to its next project, known as "Game 6."

"Not at all. Our focus is entirely on Helldivers 2 for now," he stated. "A very small team will begin preliminary work on something else later this year, but progress will be slow. Helldivers is and will remain our primary focus for a long time."

So, how long can players expect content updates for Helldivers 2 to continue?

"As long as the community keeps playing and purchasing Super Credits, we can keep supporting the game," Jorjani explained, referring to the virtual currency used for Premium Warbonds. "Last summer, we faced significant challenges that threatened our long-term plans, but we corrected course. Thanks to your strong support, the future looks promising."
