During today's Mario Kart World Direct presentation, we uncovered additional insights into the game's brand-new Free Roam mode, highlighting its robust multiplayer capabilities and exploring exactly what players will experience while navigating the expansive world of Mario Kart World...well, the entire world itself.
Although we had hands-on time with Mario Kart World last week, today's presentation offered our first comprehensive look at the Free Roam mode and its features. This innovative addition allows players to explore virtually anywhere across a vast, open-world map reminiscent of Forza Horizon. In contrast to previous entries where race tracks were isolated and accessed only during races, Mario Kart World integrates these courses into an open environment, enabling you to drive between tracks in specific game modes and enjoy the spaces in between. When not competing in races, Free Roam serves as a platform for mini-adventures. The expansive world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though their exact functions remain unclear at this time. Additionally, P-Switches are scattered throughout the map; hitting one can trigger small challenges like gathering blue coins.
Furthermore, Free Roam includes an always-accessible Photo Mode, allowing you to capture snapshots of your racers in various poses and angles from different perspectives. This mode is not limited to solo play either. You and your friends can explore together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply socialize. Free Roam supports up to four players on a single system via split-screen, or up to eight players total through local wireless connectivity (with two players per console).
The Mario Kart World Direct also revealed several other details about the upcoming title, including new characters, courses, and game modes. You can review all the announcements made during the event right here.
