Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

Authore: SadieUpdate:May 14,2025

Gamers let out a collective groan last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite "who knows?" This delay was triggered by import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which caused a ripple effect across financial markets and extended beyond U.S. borders. Nintendo Canada has also confirmed that pre-orders in their region are postponed, dashing hopes of securing a unit through a relative in Winnipeg.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not commence on April 9, 2025, to synchronize with the yet-to-be-determined pre-order schedule in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in an announcement to the Canadian tech outlet MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will release updated information at a later time. The launch date remains firm on June 5, 2025."

This statement echoes the one given to IGN by Nintendo of America on April 4, though the Canadian version omits any specific mention of tariffs.

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not begin on April 9, 2025, as Nintendo assesses the potential impact of tariffs and the shifting market dynamics. An update on the timing will be provided later. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

Despite the original pre-order date looming tomorrow, there's still no clarity on when eager fans can start the frantic process of refreshing their browsers and double-checking their credit card details, leaving gamers in a state of uncertainty and worried about potential price hikes from the originally announced $449.99.

Meanwhile, in other countries, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have already begun in the UK today, with smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths quickly selling out. Scalpers have taken advantage, listing pre-orders on eBay for £500 ($639) or more, far exceeding the official retail price of £395.99 ($506).
