Rumors are swirling that Red Dead Redemption 2 could make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 by the end of 2025. According to GameReactor, sources close to Rockstar Games have indicated that not only is a Switch 2 port in the works, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S is also on the horizon. These enhancements are expected to boost the game's performance on current-gen consoles as well. While specifics remain under wraps, GameReactor suggests that both the port and the upgrade could be available as soon as later this year.
Echoing these rumors, Nintenduo reports that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might hit the shelves within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally or as a physical edition.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2018, IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10 score. Our review praised it as a "meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to the Switch 2 might not be a shock. During a recent Q&A session with investors after Take-Two's financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted that Nintendo's support for third-party publishers this time around has been notably better than in the past.
"We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," Zelnick stated. He acknowledged the historical challenges of being a third-party in the Nintendo business but noted that Nintendo has been proactive in addressing these issues. Zelnick also emphasized that while they aim to be where the consumers are, not every title would necessarily be brought to every platform. He hinted at potential opportunities with their back catalog, suggesting that while GTA 6 might not be coming to the Switch 2, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could.

Specifically, Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 to the Switch 2 on its launch day, June 5, along with titles from the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (though specifics on which games and when are still unclear), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. These titles are not surprising as Take-Two already publishes these franchises on the current Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door might be open for other releases, particularly from their back catalog, in the future.
