Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony's Secret Los Angeles Studio: A New AAA IP in the Works

Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks their 20th first-party studio and adds to PlayStation's already impressive lineup of development houses. The studio's existence was revealed through a recent job posting for a Project Senior Producer, confirming the creation of a "newly-established AAA studio" in the city. Details remain scarce, but the studio is reportedly developing a groundbreaking, original AAA title for the PS5.

The gaming community is buzzing with speculation about the studio's identity and its project. Two prominent theories are circulating:

Theory 1: A Bungie Spin-off: Following Bungie layoffs in July 2024, a significant number of employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. It's possible this new studio houses a team working on a previously announced "Gummybears" incubation project from Bungie.

Theory 2: The Jason Blundell Team: Industry veteran Jason Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops, co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, leading to speculation that Blundell's team now forms the core of this new Los Angeles studio. This theory gains traction due to the team's longer gestation period compared to the potential Bungie spin-off. The new project might be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous work.

Regardless of its origins, the existence of this undisclosed studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans. While an official announcement and details about the game remain elusive, the prospect of another first-party AAA title adds to the already robust PlayStation game pipeline. It likely will be several years before Sony reveals more information.
