Top Pokémon Card Gains and Losses This Week - May 9

Authore: HenryUpdate:May 17,2025

Another week brings more excitement and volatility to the Pokémon TCG single card market as enthusiasts eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the preorders for Black Bolt and White Flare at the Pokémon Center managed to evade a bot-driven frenzy this time around.

This week's most notable price drop belongs to Greninja ex 214/167, which has seen its value plummet by nearly 50% since the beginning of the year. We're also witnessing significant price reductions across cards from the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies is experiencing a surge, nearly doubling in value since the start of the year, with its artwork highlighting the card's undervalued status.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its depiction of a battle against Venusaur and is gradually increasing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is taking flight, gaining an additional $100 in value since the start of the year. Let's explore the other significant risers and fallers in the Pokémon TCG market this week.

Pokémon Card Crashes

While Sword and Shield era Pokémon Cards are finally experiencing an upward trend, most Scarlet and Violet series cards are returning to more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from the 151 set is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. It's a must-have for any collector's binder this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon in Pokémon Blue, so the Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. This card has seen a massive 52% drop since mid-March, making it an affordable and beautiful addition to any collection.

Moving to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR has always been a standout card in the set. With a 40% price drop since February, it's now available for a reasonable $18.17.

Charizard ex SIR from Obsidian Flames boasts a stunning stained glass look in its Tera form, making it a showstopper. Although it hasn't dropped significantly since March, every dollar saved counts.

The biggest price crash this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the most expensive card of the Scarlet and Violet era. However, with the arrival of Prismatic Evolutions, the fear of missing out (FOMO) intensified. Despite the drop, it remains a high-quality card at $275, a stark contrast to its $411.62 price tag at the end of February.

Pokémon Card Climbers

Turning to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is a coveted card from the Sword and Shield era. Already valued at over $500, it's now at $649.99 and shows no signs of slowing down. It could potentially reach the $1,000 mark in a few years, so it's a wise investment if you can afford it.

Charizard V Alt Art captures the essence of a battle against Venusaur, showcasing dynamic movement rather than the static poses common in many Pokémon cards. It has gained $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.
