Key Terms in Phom (Ta La)

• Phom: A set of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5♠, 6♠, 7♠) or three cards of the same rank (e.g., three Queens).
• Junk Cards: Cards that don’t belong to any phom—also known as “dead cards” or “trash.”
• Ù: When a player forms three phoms with no junk cards left—this is a winning hand.
• Stomach (Nọc): The remaining undealt cards placed in the center of the table after distribution.
• Móm: When a player ends the game without forming any phom—resulting in a móm penalty.
• Take the Pin: Playing a discard that another player picks up in their turn.
• Send: On your final turn, if your discard can be added to another player’s phom, you may “send” it—removing it from your score.
• Compensation: If a player takes a pin and the next player ù, the pin-taker must compensate the winner. Additional compensation applies if a player collects three consecutive cards.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

• Each game supports 2 to 4 players. Each player receives 9 cards, while the dealer (or previous winner) gets 10 cards.
• The remaining cards form the Stud pile (Nọc), placed face-down in the center.
• Play proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
• The first player discards any card. The next player may take it to complete a phom or draw from the Stud pile.
• After drawing (either by taking or picking), the player discards one card.
• This continues until one player achieves Ù (three phoms, zero junk cards) or after four full rounds if no one ù.
• If no one ù, the game ends and scores are calculated based on remaining junk cards.

Scoring Rules When No One Ù

• The player with the lowest total point value in junk cards wins.
• Card values: A = 1, J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13; numbered cards equal their face value.
• In case of a tie, the player who laid down their cards first wins.

Final Score Calculation

• First place: +6 points
• Second place: -1 point
• Third place: -2 points
• Last place: -3 points
• Player who gets the pin: -4 points
• Player who takes the pin: +4 points
• Player who ù: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
• Burned/Burnt player: loses 4 points to the winner
