Application Description

If you're looking for an engaging and strategic game to challenge a friend, Spite & Malice is the perfect competitive patience game for two players. Each player starts with a hand of 5 cards, a pay-off pile of 20 cards, and 4 empty side stacks to strategize their moves. At the center of the table, you'll find 3 empty center stacks and the stock pile, which holds the rest of the deck.

The goal is simple yet thrilling: be the first to empty your pay-off pile and claim victory! The center stacks are built up sequentially from ace to king, regardless of suit. For instance, you might start with an ace of diamonds, followed by a two of spades, then a three of hearts, and so on. The twist? Kings are wild! Play a king on any center stack, and it magically transforms into the card needed to continue the sequence. If you place a king of spades on top of a ten of clubs, that king becomes a queen, keeping the game dynamic and unpredictable.

When a center stack reaches completion by playing a queen or king on a jack, it's shuffled back into the stock pile, adding another layer of strategy. Side stacks offer flexibility; you can place any card there, but remember, only the top card is in play. At the start of each turn, draw from the stock pile to refill your hand to 5 cards, keeping your options open.

During your turn, you have several moves at your disposal:

  • Play the top card from your pay-off pile onto a center stack.
  • Move the top card from one of your side stacks to a center stack.
  • Place a card from your hand onto a center stack.
  • Add a card from your hand to one of your side stacks, which will end your turn.

The game reaches its climax when a player successfully plays their last card from the pay-off pile onto a center stack, winning the round and scoring points equal to the number of cards remaining in their opponent's pay-off pile. If the stock pile runs out before anyone empties their pay-off pile, the game ends in a tie, with no points awarded. The first player to accumulate 50 points wins the match, making every move count in this battle of wits and strategy!
