Bayonetta Origins Ex-Director Enlists with Sony

PlatinumGames Loses Key Director to Housemarque

The departure of Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, from PlatinumGames to Housemarque, adds to the growing concerns surrounding PlatinumGames' future. Tinari's move to a lead game designer role at the Returnal developer follows a period of significant personnel changes at PlatinumGames.

This latest departure follows the high-profile exit of Hideki Kamiya, the renowned creator of Bayonetta, in September 2023. Kamiya cited creative differences with the studio's direction as his reason for leaving. His subsequent announcement as the lead developer for Capcom's Okami sequel at The Game Awards 2024, reigniting the Clover Studio, further fueled speculation about PlatinumGames' trajectory.

Following the Okami sequel announcement, rumors circulated about additional key PlatinumGames developers leaving the studio, evidenced by the removal of PlatinumGames mentions from their social media profiles. Tinari's relocation to Helsinki, Finland, and subsequent confirmation of his position at Housemarque via his LinkedIn profile, confirms one of these departures.

Tinari's New Role at Housemarque

Since the release of the acclaimed Returnal in May 2021 and its subsequent acquisition by PlayStation, Housemarque has been developing a new, unannounced IP. It's highly probable Tinari will contribute to this project. While a release date remains undisclosed, many anticipate an unveiling no sooner than 2026.

PlatinumGames' Uncertain Future

The impact of these high-profile departures on PlatinumGames' upcoming projects remains to be seen. The studio recently announced a year-long celebration for Bayonetta's 15th anniversary, potentially including a new installment in the franchise. Additionally, development continues on Project GG, a new IP in development since 2020, though its progress is uncertain given Hideki Kamiya's departure. The future of Project GG, previously under Kamiya's direction, is now shrouded in doubt, with potential delays likely.
