Authore: GabriellaUpdate:Dec 18,2025

Wizards of the Coast has been steadily revealing details about the Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collaboration set for this summer. Over the weekend, they showcased a substantial number of cards from both the main set and Commander decks, delighting fans with playful and unexpected nods to beloved Final Fantasy titles.

The Universes Beyond partnership with Final Fantasy includes a standard Commander format and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast array of cards. The main set spans the entire mainline Final Fantasy series, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks highlight four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, led by Commanders Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola, respectively.

At last Saturday's Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East, several cards highlighted the narrative arcs of key characters. For instance, Final Fantasy IV’s Cecil features a mechanic that reflects his transformation from Dark Knight to Paladin. The summons in Final Fantasy are represented as "Saga Creatures," powerful yet fleeting forces that blend Magic and Final Fantasy themes seamlessly.

Another standout is Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, with artwork by Square’s Tetsuya Nomura. The card captures Sephiroth’s evolution across the FF7 universe, from a young warrior to Safer Sephiroth in the form of Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

No Final Fantasy set would be complete without Cids. This collection includes a Cid from each numbered Final Fantasy game, with Wizards choosing the elder Cid from Final Fantasy XV over his daughter, Cindy.

Following the panel, Wizards of the Coast released the decklists for the four Commander decks, sparking excitement as fans explored how these Final Fantasy games were adapted into Magic. The results are impressive.

Reprinted Magic cards feature clever Final Fantasy crossovers. For example, Skullclamp’s artwork draws inspiration from Final Fantasy 7’s Jenova project.

Together, Forever taps into the emotional depth of Final Fantasy 10, reflecting the protagonists’ poignant journey through a devastated world. Be aware that some cards reference key story moments, potentially spoiling plot points for the respective games.

To balance the tone, Wizards included lighter moments, like Inspiring Call, which nods to a famously memed scene from Final Fantasy 10.

Wizards also embraced Final Fantasy’s playful side. Clever Concealment reimagines the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses en route to Don Corneo’s, complete with a fitting mechanic. Secret Rendezvous offers four versions of the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7, featuring Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

Fans have been thrilled by the meticulous details woven into the cards. The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is packed with references to the acclaimed MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card captures the gentleman’s knack for vanishing and reappearing, creating a dynamic White/Black card.

A Final Fantasy 14 subreddit user pointed out that the Archaeomancer’s Map card references a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.

Final Fantasy 14 fans have also enjoyed the humor in cards like Thancred, tied to the “This is Thancred” meme, and the Rite of Replication card, with fan-added flavor text celebrating a famous A Realm Reborn speech.

The Tome of Legends card even depicts a Wondrous Tails book, complete with in-game details like missed four-in-a-row connections.

The evident care put into these cards has sparked excitement for the full set. While the Commander decks shine, reveals like Commune With Beavers from the panel have fans eager to see how other Final Fantasy titles are adapted into the broader Magic set.

Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set launches on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend one week earlier.
