A Glimpse into a Lost Iron Man Game
Following the release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Edwards began work on an Iron Man title tentatively titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's original comic book name. He shared title card images, gameplay screenshots, and Xbox gameplay footage (startup screen and a desert-set tutorial) on X.
Activision's Decision
Despite fan enthusiasm, Activision canceled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development commenced. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards suggested several possibilities: delays to the Iron Man film, dissatisfaction with the game's progress, or another developer potentially securing the rights.
A Different Iron Man
The game's Iron Man design, markedly different from Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal, closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version of the early 2000s. Edwards stated the design choice was the artist's decision.
He promised more gameplay footage, but at the time of writing, this has yet to be released. The revelation offers a fascinating look at a lost piece of gaming history.
