The upcoming Silent Hill f marks a significant shift in the franchise, being the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating certification in Japan. As highlighted in the Japanese-language reveal trailer that debuted last night, Silent Hill f is rated Mature in the U.S., PEGI 18 in Europe, and CERO:Z in Japan. While the game is still in development and ratings can change, this new rating stands out when compared to previous entries. As noted by Automaton, earlier games like Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill: The Room were rated CERO:C, suitable for those aged 15 and up, while other games in the series typically received CERO:C or CERO:D ratings (ages 17+). Notably, even the Silent Hill 2 Remake by Bloober Team, which earned a mature rating (17+) in Western countries, was rated CERO:C in Japan.
During last night's Silent Hill Transmission, Konami provided an update solely focused on Silent Hill f, the first mainline entry in the iconic horror series in 13 years, first announced in 2022. The game transports players to 1960s Japan, where they'll follow the story of Shimizu Hinako, a teenager battling societal and familial expectations. The narrative is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed creator of the When They Cry visual novel series.
The reveal trailer showcased Hinako in various states of distress, bloodied, wounded, and wearing a torn Japanese school uniform. Although most of the footage consisted of cutscenes rather than gameplay, viewers got a glimpse of Silent Hill f's eerie setting and unique monster designs. The trailer suggested an Otherworld environment distinct from the series' traditional rusted and fan-filled locales, featuring blood-red flowers instead.
Currently, there is no release date set for Silent Hill f, and no new information was shared about No Code's Silent Hill game, Townfall.
