At San Diego Comic-Con, the creative team behind Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced their intention to conclude the series with Season 5—though they're eager to keep exploring the Star Trek universe. Their ultimate goal? A spinoff focusing on Paul Wesley's James T. Kirk during his inaugural year as captain.
"We’d love nothing more than to chronicle the shift from Pike’s crew to Kirk’s, showing how these iconic relationships began," series showrunner Henry Alonso Myers shared with Entertainment Weekly during SDCC.
"By the time of The Original Series, these bonds were already strong. We’d explore how they formed—whether it’s Sulu’s journey, McCoy’s introduction, or Chekov’s arrival. The potential is incredible."
Myers hinted that he and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman have crafted destinies for characters not seen post-Strange New Worlds in established canon, emphasizing, "Their absence doesn’t erase their stories."
To gauge interest, the duo urged fans to voice support for a prequel series. "We’re not subtle about our ambitions," Myers joked. "We remind the network these sets exist, they’re profitable—why not use them?"
Still, Strange New Worlds remains the priority. "Dreams of spinoffs aside, we need to nail Season 5 first," Myers added. With Season 3’s third episode previewed at SDCC and Season 4 wrapped, Season 5’s arrival could pave the way for Kirk’s early adventures—if fans demand it.
