Sydney Sweeney in Final Talks for Live-Action Gundam Role

Authore: EvelynUpdate:Apr 20,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in HBO's "Euphoria," "The White Lotus," and the recent "Madame Web," is reportedly in final negotiations to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, "Mobile Suit Gundam." This project, which is being co-financed by Bandai Namco and Legendary, entered production in February and is set to be directed and written by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of "Sweet Tooth."

While specific plot and character details remain under wraps, the film, which has yet to receive an official title, is slated for a global theatrical release. A teaser poster has been released to build anticipation among fans, but no release window has been announced.

The involvement of Sweeney in the "Gundam" movie was first reported by Variety. This casting news comes on the heels of Sweeney's recent attachment to a horror film based on a Reddit thread, where she is set to both star and produce.

Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their commitment to providing updates as details are finalized. They highlighted the significance of "Mobile Suit Gundam," which first aired in 1979 and revolutionized the robot anime genre by introducing realistic war depictions, detailed scientific elements, and complex human dramas centered around the concept of 'mobile suits' as weapons. This groundbreaking series sparked a massive cultural phenomenon and established the 'real robot anime' genre, moving away from the traditional good vs. evil narratives prevalent in earlier robot anime.
