The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, while expanding its appeal to younger and female players, remains committed to its core identity: middle-aged men engaging in relatable, middle-aged activities.

Maintaining the "Middle-Aged Dude" Vibe

Despite a surge in female and younger fans, director Ryosuke Horii affirmed in an interview with AUTOMATON that the series won't compromise its focus on the experiences and perspectives of middle-aged men. The series' charm, according to Horii and lead planner Hirotaka Chiba, lies in this authenticity. Ichiban Kasuga's love for Dragon Quest and the characters' everyday struggles, like back pain, resonate with players because they feel genuine and human.

This commitment to portraying relatable "middle-aged guy things" was echoed by series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi in a 2016 Famitsu interview (via Siliconera). While acknowledging the increased female fanbase (approximately 20%), he emphasized the game's original design for a male audience and a desire to avoid altering the core experience to cater solely to new demographics.

Criticism of Female Representation

However, the series' focus on male perspectives has drawn criticism regarding its portrayal of female characters. Many feel the series relies on sexist tropes, relegating women to supporting roles or objectifying them. Concerns have been raised about the limited number of female playable characters and the often-suggestive or sexualized comments made by male characters towards them. The recurring "damsel in distress" archetype further fuels this critique. While Chiba jokingly acknowledged the continuation of such scenarios in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the issue remains a point of contention.

Progress and Future Outlook

Despite these criticisms, the series has shown progress in its newer installments. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, receiving a 92 score from Game8, is lauded as a successful balance between honoring the franchise's legacy and charting a new course. While the series continues to navigate the complexities of representation, its evolution suggests a path towards a more inclusive future, even while maintaining its core identity.
