Application Description

Mancala games are a beloved family of two-player turn-based strategy board games with origins tracing back centuries. Played using small stones, beans, or seeds distributed across rows of pits or holes carved into the ground or arranged on a wooden board, these games emphasize tactical thinking and foresight. The core objective typically revolves around capturing more of your opponent’s pieces than they do of yours. With roots across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, mancala variants like oware, bao, and omweso have evolved into culturally significant pastimes enjoyed worldwide.

This digital adaptation brings together several classic mancala-style games, including kalah, oware, and congkak, offering players an engaging way to experience traditional gameplay. Each game features a symmetrical board with six small pits—commonly referred to as houses—on each side and a larger pit at each end known as the store or end zone. The goal remains consistent: outmaneuver your opponent and collect the majority of seeds in your store by the end of the match.

How to Play Kalah

Kalah is one of the most widely recognized versions of mancala, especially popular in the Western world. Here’s how it works:

  1. At the start, each house contains four seeds (though some variations use five or six). The stores begin empty.
  2. Each player owns the six houses on their side of the board. Your score is determined by the number of seeds in your store, located to your right.
  3. On your turn, select any non-empty house on your side. Pick up all the seeds and begin sowing them one by one into subsequent houses in a counter-clockwise direction. This includes your own store but skips the opponent’s store.
  4. If the last seed lands in an empty house you own and the opposite house (on your opponent’s side) contains seeds, you capture both the last seed and all seeds from the opposite house, placing them directly into your store.
  5. If your final seed lands in your own store, you earn an extra move. There's no limit to how many consecutive moves you can make, as long as each ends in your store.
  6. The game ends when one player has no seeds left in their six houses. The other player then moves any remaining seeds on their side to their store. The winner is the player with the most seeds in their store.

How to Play Oware

Oware, also known as Awalé or Wari, is a more complex variant commonly played in West Africa. Its rules emphasize careful planning and strategic distribution:

  1. Each house starts with four seeds (sometimes five or six), and players control the six houses on their side. Unlike Kalah, there are no permanent stores; instead, captured seeds are kept aside as your score.
  2. On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your houses and sow them counter-clockwise, one seed per house. Sowing skips the starting house (which becomes empty) and does not include scoring pits. If a house contains 12 or more seeds, the twelfth seed lands in the next house after skipping the starting pit.
  3. Captures occur only when the final seed you sow brings an opponent’s house to exactly two or three seeds. That house is captured. If the previous house (counter-clockwise) also totals two or three and belongs to the opponent, it is captured too—this chain continues until the sequence breaks.
  4. If all of your opponent’s houses are empty, you must make a move that replenishes seeds on their side. If no such move exists, you capture all remaining seeds on your side, ending the game immediately.
  5. The game concludes when a player captures more than half of the total seeds (25 out of 48), resulting in a win. If both players reach exactly 24 seeds, the game ends in a draw.
