BG3's Patch 7 Brings In Over A Million Mods Shortly After Rollout

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7 has officially launched, sending shockwaves through the gaming community—not just for its new content, but for the explosive growth of player-created mods. Within hours of release, the modding scene exploded, marking a new era for the game’s customization and creativity.

Swen Vincke Confirms Modding Success: "It's Pretty Big"

Just one day after Patch 7 went live on September 5, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) to share an impressive milestone: over one million mods had been installed. “Modding is pretty big — we had more than a million mods installed in less than 24 hours,” Vincke announced. The momentum didn’t stop there. Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, chimed in, confirming that mod installations had already surpassed 3 million and were still accelerating. “Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating,” Reismanis replied, highlighting the unprecedented player engagement.

Patch 7 didn’t just open the door to modding—it kicked it down. The update introduced a native Mod Manager developed by Larian, allowing players to browse, install, and manage community mods directly from within the game. No more third-party tools or external sites—everything is now seamlessly integrated.

For creators, the modding toolkit remains available as a standalone app on Steam. It empowers modders to build custom stories using Larian’s internal scripting language, Osiris. The toolkit supports script loading, debugging, and direct publishing, making it easier than ever for developers and fans alike to bring their visions to life.

The Road to Cross-Platform Modding

A major highlight from recent statements is Larian’s push toward cross-platform modding. As reported by PC Gamer, a community-developed tool called “BG3 Toolkit Unlocked,” uploaded by modder Siegfre on Nexus, now includes a full level editor and re-enables previously restricted features in Larian’s official editor. This marks a significant leap in creative freedom, despite the studio’s initial hesitation.

“We are a game development company, we're not a tools company,” Vincke previously told PC Gamer, explaining the cautious approach. Still, the demand has pushed Larian to expand access. Now, the team is actively working on enabling cross-platform mod support. “We'll start with the PC version,” Vincke explained. “The console version will come a bit later because it has to go through a bunch of submission processes. It also gives us the time to see whatever goes wrong and fix it.”

Beyond modding, Patch 7 enhances the overall gameplay experience with refined UI elements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and a long list of bug fixes and performance improvements. With Larian showing strong commitment to post-launch support, players can expect continued updates—and potentially more news on cross-platform modding in the near future.
