NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled the first gameplay footage for the T-1000, a new DLC guest character, and confirmed that Madam Bo will join the game as a DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay features attacks reminiscent of the iconic Terminator 2 movie, including the use of blade and hook arms, which echo the moves of Mortal Kombat characters Baraka and Kabal. The T-1000 also demonstrates a transformation into a liquid metal blob, executing an uppercut similar to Glacius from Killer Instinct.
Actor Robert Patrick, who portrayed the T-1000 in the 1991 film, lends his voice and likeness to the character in Mortal Kombat 1. The teaser showcases Patrick's voice during a confrontation with Johnny Cage, culminating in a Fatality that recreates the famous truck chase scene from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 emerges from the vehicle to unleash a barrage of gunfire on Cage.
Simultaneously, NetherRealm announced that Madam Bo, a beloved character from the Mortal Kombat 1 storyline, will be available as a Kameo fighter alongside the T-1000. Known for her role as a resilient restaurant owner in the game's narrative, Madam Bo briefly appears in the teaser assisting the T-1000 in a battle against Johnny Cage. The T-1000 will be accessible in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 during the early access period for Khaos Reigns owners, with general availability for purchase following on March 25. Madam Bo will also be available on March 18, either as a free update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 joins a roster that includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amid speculation about the future of Mortal Kombat 1 and potential plans for a Kombat Pack 3, Warner Bros. Discovery remains committed to the franchise. CEO David Zaslav has stated that the company intends to focus on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
Madam Bo joins Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo fighter.Development chief Ed Boon has assured fans that NetherRealm is dedicated to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for the foreseeable future, despite having chosen its next project three years ago. While many anticipate the next installment in the Injustice series, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. Instead of alternating between the two franchises as expected, NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon discussed the decision to focus on another Mortal Kombat game, citing factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Boon emphasized that the decision was not a closure for the Injustice franchise, leaving the door open for future developments in that series.
