Last year was a banner year for gaming, but one title that truly captured the hearts and minds of players and critics was the indie roguelike sensation, Balatro. Not only did it garner widespread critical acclaim, but this game, crafted by the solo developer known as LocalThunk, also achieved staggering commercial success, with sales now soaring past the 5 million mark!
Remarkably, just over a month ago, LocalThunk was celebrating the sale of 3.5 million copies. This means that in approximately 40 days, Balatro managed to sell an additional 1.5 million copies! The surge in sales can likely be attributed to the "Game Awards effect," a phenomenon that LocalThunk alluded to in a recent tweet.
Harvey Elliott, the CEO of publisher Playstack, hailed this milestone as an extraordinary achievement deserving of celebration. He also expressed immense pride in both Balatro's developer and the dedicated team at Playstack.
It's evident that nearly a year after its initial release, Balatro continues to thrive. This card-based roguelike game is still receiving updates, featuring exciting collaborations, and has recently achieved a new personal record for peak concurrent players on Steam.
