Onimusha: Way of the Sword Breaks from Trends with Focus on Visceral Combat

Onimusha: Way of the Sword breaks from modern gaming trends by avoiding soulslike mechanics and open-world design. Learn about Capcom's creative vision and their dedication to authentically portraying legendary actor Toshiro Mifune's likeness.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword Stays True to the Series

Not an Open-World Soulslike

Onimusha Returns After Two Decades with Classic Combat Focus

As the first mainline Onimusha entry in 20 years, Way of the Sword aims to refine the series' celebrated formula rather than chase current trends. Director Satoru Nihei confirmed in a June 19th interview with Automaton that the game will forgo both open-world structure and punishing soulslike mechanics.

Developer Promises Accessible Yet Deep Swordplay for All Players

"We're prioritizing the visceral thrill of blade combat while ensuring accessibility," Nihei explained. The development team aims to create an experience that satisfies both hardcore action fans and genre newcomers alike through its refined combat system.

This direction aligns with earlier statements from Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki, who confirmed to Famitsu in March that the game will maintain traditional linear progression. Expect over 20 hours of content in this potential CERO Z-rated (18+) samurai adventure.

Capcom Spent 2 Years To Get Toshiro Mifune's Likeness

Legendary Actor Toshiro Mifune Inspires Protagonist Design

Development since 2020 has focused on authentic samurai representation, particularly in casting legendary actor Toshiro Mifune (virtually) as protagonist Musashi Miyamoto. Nihei revealed to Game Watch on June 16th that securing rights to Mifune's likeness required two years of negotiations.

Mifune

"When envisioning our bloodied, mud-strewn warrior, Mifune was the only choice," Nihei explained, referencing the actor's iconic portrayal of Musashi in 1950s samurai films. This marks Capcom's continued reverence for Mifune's legacy, following their collaboration on the 2023 Netflix anime adaptation.

Slated for 2026 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Onimusha: Way of the Sword promises to deliver an authentic yet accessible samurai experience steeped in Japanese warrior tradition.
