Monster Hunter Wilds: A Deep Dive into Starting Equipment
Many Monster Hunter players cite crafting new equipment from hard-earned hunt materials as a major draw. The satisfaction of a complete armor set and matching weapon, painstakingly acquired, is a familiar feeling for veteran hunters. This core gameplay loop—slaying monsters and harnessing their power through crafted equipment—has been a series staple since the beginning.
In an IGN interview, Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka highlighted this concept: "While our designs have broadened, we were once very focused on the idea that Rathalos equipment should make you look like Rathalos." Wilds introduces new monsters, each with unique and visually striking equipment. Rompopolo, a mad scientist-inspired creature, for example, boasts head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask (see the accompanying hunt video).
Beyond the distinctive monster-themed gear, the developers emphasized the significance of the starting equipment. Fujioka stated, "I designed all 14 starting weapon types from scratch—a first for me. Previously, new hunters started with basic weapons. But our protagonist is a chosen hunter, so plain weapons felt wrong. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel special."
Director Yuya Tokuda added, "In World, weapon designs, while customized based on materials, retained a similar form. In Wilds, each weapon has a unique design." This reflects the narrative: you're an experienced hunter investigating the Forbidden Lands. The starting armor, the "Hope" series, is equally detailed and story-aligned.
The deep emerald green Hope set forms a hooded long coat when complete. Fujioka explained the design challenge: "We paid more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games had separate upper and lower body armor; we couldn't create a coat. Gameplay limitations dictated separate pieces, but I wanted a flowing hooded coat. We achieved this by investing significant resources. We still want players to experiment with various equipment, so the Hope set is stylish but not overly flashy."
Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a unique luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are designed to reflect a seasoned, elite hunter. We eagerly anticipate experiencing their detail in the final game.
